RIM’s BlackBerry Mobile Fusion: What to expect.

As an Elite BlackBerry Alliance partner for many years MSC had little choice but to react to the market swing towards non Blackberry devices.  It's great to see some postitive news from RIM and we look forward to evaluating and welcoming BlackBerry Mobile Fusion to our ever growing stack of MDM platforms that we support.

RIM’s BlackBerry Mobile Fusion: What to expect.

Research In Motion (RIM) the maker of BlackBerry announced on Tuesday 29th November 2011, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion,  its designed to help IT Departments manage not just BlackBerry smartphones and tablets, but  Apple's iOS, Google's Android OS devices, via a web-based interface from RIM.

BlackBerry Colt to use ActiveSync

RIM have just announced that they are aiming to relase their first smarphone running the QNX operating system by Q1 2012 and it will be called the Colt.  Normally this would be great news as the QNX platform is the future for RIM and they have to move to it due to the current BlackBerry OS not supporting multi core as an example of one of many reasons.  However I am absolutely amazed at the comment that it will not be supported by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) and will communicate via ActiveSync out of the box.

So a few things immeditatley spring to mind.

  1. The Ubitexx strategy makes some sense now...to manage a BlackBerry via ActiveSync.
  2. This makes a BlackBerry no different to any other ActiveSync based smartphone like iPhones, Android or Phone 7.
  3. How will a QNX powered Colt sell without an ecosystem of Apps? This may depend on what it comes pre-loaded with.

A BlackBerry without BES control is like a Microsoft phone that does not talk to Exchange.  It's all a bit odd and just does not make sense.  Perhaps we are missing something here, only time will tell.

Will RIM be Canada's Wang?

There has been a lot of hype and news in IT circles regarding Mobility, particularly in respect to the rise of Apple iPhone and Android smartphones at the expense of RIM’s BlackBerry devices. RIM’s challenges have an interesting parallel with those of another technology giant of yester year -  Wang Laboratories.

When I was a kid I went to my mother’s office after school. I was impressed by the big reception and well appointed offices but what really fired my imagination was the fancy machine my mother spent most of her time working on. It was a Wang PC. It was great technology and Wang was BIG with revenues of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. However, within fifteen years of its peak, the organization had effectively disappeared from the product lines it was so respected for.
What happened to Wang?
Wang’s demise as a computing giant was brought about by simple but avoidable factors:
